The Psychology of Fitness

Why do so many people choose not to keep fit? I’m not talking about being able to complete an Ironman Triathlon or marathon. Just a solid basic fitness level where you feel good, look good and can physically perform at an above average level. In my humble opinion those that don’t have not found their proper motivation to do so. It’s that simple.

So what do I mean by that? Well….it’s a rather unique motivation unlike all others. And sadly, not everyone can tap into this type of motivation due to many factors. It needs to be the type of motivation that stirs you to your very core. Emotionally that is. Let me give you a few examples. For instance…when I hear the national anthem played I tear up. It stirs me to my very core. Which is great, but not THE motivation to get me into the gym when I don’t feel like going. However, I do have one motivation that keeps me not only focused on going to the gym, but to crushing every workout like it was my last. Years ago I lost a very dear friend in a tragic helicopter accident. A former special forces solider and Delta Force operator, Mike was the epitome of physical fitness. Every day (except Sundays) he called me at 6am, his loud voice booming over the phone…”WAKE UP SKIPPY….TIME TO GO TO THE GYM!” Of course he was already at the gym or leaving before I even got up. We often worked out together when we had the opportunity and those times are very special to me. His death was hard to bear, but now that he is gone I use the pain and loss to “weaponize” my motivation to go to the gym even when I don’t want to go. It’s that simple folks.

Why? I know Mike would be hugely disappointed in me for not going or to use some BS excuse not to go. The very thought of it makes me sick to my stomach and moves me emotionally in a very deep way. IF you can find this kind of motivation to keep you focused and motivated to go to the gym or anything else in your life where performance is important, you become a very dangerous person. You have found the key to your success and the pathway to staying fit and in top shape. Take the time to really think about whom it is that would cause you to not disappoint them, no matter what. Is it your mom, dad, brother, sister, children? When you do, you will know it immediately. I actually keep a laminated photo in my gym bag of Mike. It sits in my bag during my workouts. When I go to get a drink I see him. It doesn’t get much better than that for me to keep my workouts intense and focused. This may sound easy…it’s not.
